First graders should spend no more than 15 minutes each evening on homework and read everyday. If your child is consistently spending more time than this, or if a particular assignment takes considerably longer, please let me know via email or by writing directly on the homework sheet.
Unless otherwise specified, homework is due the following school day. Parents often wonder, "Should I correct my child's mistakes? How will the teacher know he/she is having a problem?" My advice is, yes, point out the mistakes to your child in a gentle way, and use that opportunity to re-teach and clarify the skill. If you would like me to know about a particular problem area, you can always jot a note on the homework or a separate sheet, and I'll respond as soon as possible (or reteach the skill the following day).
A student is required to return homework the morning it is due as they arrive in the classroom. I understand that life gets busy and difficult sometimes, so I do give each student three "oops passes" with no penalties each trimester. If a student forgets to return homework more than three times in one trimester, he/she will stay after school to complete the missing work or use their free choice time to finish the missing assignment.
Nightly Book Bags
Mrs. Hill, our reading specialist, will be providing us with nightly reading book bags for students who are reading at or below grade level. If your child receives a book bag with a recording log to take home daily, please read one book each evening. Please listen to your child read (a few times if it's a short book) and then rate the book on the sheet. When the book bag is returned on Friday, we'll replace all the books for the following week. This is not a mandatory program, so if you miss a night it's not a problem just send the books back every Friday.
